Fine Arts

LCA has a well developed fine arts program. Visual Art classes are offered to all students. Age and ability-level choir, orchestra, band, and music classes are a part of the curriculum for all grades. Drama performances, which are open to the public, are also a part of the Junior and Senior High School experience.

Visual Arts

Our fine arts department introduces students from kindergarten through 12th grade to a wide range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art techniques as well as art appreciation and biblical art philosophy. Students work in a variety of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpting using pencil, crayon, oil pastels, watercolor and acrylic paint, linoleum, wood, clay, and papier-mâché. Older students learn how to mat and display their two-dimensional projects and all students participate in a yearly art exhibit. Our fine arts classes encourage students to explore their creative abilities in a godly environment.

General Music

Our general music program is offered for children in Kindergarten through 6th grade. Children will be invited to progressively learn about music history, theory, and performance techniques associated with not only western music, but world music as well. Considering music from a biblical point of view, we will discover the creativity of our Creator through not only participation, but the creation of music using different techniques such as Orff and Kodaly. Studies in general music will be tailored and linked to the subjects students are learning in their general classroom and will lead towards culminating projects and performances presented at special events during the year.

In addition, each lesson should direct students to specific life skills and concepts of overall importance. We will intentionally refer to the following precepts as bases for our musical understanding, practice, and performance:

UP- The study of music, its beauty, scope, and guiding principles, allows us to see aspects of God’s character.
IN- The study of music offers a tangible opportunity for people to grow in discipline, perseverance, and insight. As such, our study of music will call upon each student to bring a commitment to excellence to their work.
OUT- We are to love others as Christ loves us. One way of doing this is by sharing what we have been given. We encourage students keep in mind that they can share good gifts with other people when they pursue their passions with excellence.

General Orchestra

The orchestra program at LCA is offered for students in 5th grade through high school. In general, each rehearsal will encourage students to continue learning music theory, music history, and music skills studies in tandem with their instrumental studies. Each class will encourage the students to work towards a goal that will culminate in performances and projects throughout each semester. Though students will be given extensive support on their instruments in class, practice outside of class time is necessary and private lessons are strongly encouraged for students to keep up with the progression of the classes. Students will develop their technical and musical abilities through the methods of Paul Rolland, Mimi Zweig, and Sinichi Suzuki and will be able to explore different musical genres and styles whether it be through classical quartets, symphonic literature, jazz/contemporary combos, or music for the cinema.

Each member of the high school orchestra will also be prepared and have the option to compete in ISSMA competitions each year as soloists and small ensembles. Students will enjoy the opportunity to attend musical field trips to attend a variety of concerts and explore cities of musical importance.

Band

The band program at LCA is offered for students in 7th grade through High School. In general, each rehearsal will encourage students to continue learning music theory, music history, and music skills in tandem with their instrumental studies.

Students perform in regularly scheduled concerts during the fall and spring semesters. Members of the high school band are encouraged to be involved in ISSMA contests and to study privately to further develop skills. We couple their growth in technique with a solid base in music theory and scale memorization.

Choir

The choir program at LCA is offered for students in kindergarten through high school. In general, each class will encourage students to continue learning music theory, music history, and vocal technique through song and movement. From folk and children’s songs to octavos and modern mixed choir repertoire, students will be guided through the techniques of choral singing that allow them to learn how to musically express themselves. Choir participants in 5th-12th grades will be prepared and eligible to attend Circle the State With Song. Though all choir participants will be featured in concerts throughout the year, occasionally choir students will have the opportunity to combine with the LCA orchestras and bands, working on larger pieces for special performances. Each choir rehearsal should direct students to specific life skills and concepts of overall importance.
